Background

In recent times, the Cameroonian community (men and women of Cameroonian origin) in Germany has faced many cases of death, and the number over time is constantly increasing, considering the increase in the population of of Cameroonian origin in Germany, estimated in 2021 at nearly 50,000 people.

Many of our compatriots live in Germany in precarious conditions, in solitude or in isolation and logically do not have the minimum insurance required. When a death occurs in their isolation and the body is discovered, authorities must find answers to many questions:

  1. What continent is he from?
  2. What country is he from?
  3. Does he have any family in Germany?
  4. Who should we contact?
  5. What was he doing in Germany?
  6. Does he have any assets or holdings in Germany? (This is very often not the case.)

Who agrees to pay the burial costs of the deceased? (Whether for a transfer or for a burial on the spot, someone must pay these costs, i.e. approximately €8,000.00 for the he transfer of corpses to Cameroon and approximately €6,000.00 for a burial in Germany).

Faced with such family distress, which respectively causes a psychological, administrative and financial drama, the bereaved persons or families do not always know how to disseminate widely within the Cameroonian community. And usually if the funeral expenses (funeral and transfer of corpses of the deceased) are not supported in complete transparency by the whole community, these are managed in a very opaque way by a small group without anyone being able to know:

  1. Who helped financially and how much?
  2. What was the total amount collected?
  3. How was this amount managed?

It is with the aim of answering all these questions and especially with a view to helping Cameroonians in Germany to bear the costs of transfer of corpses in the event of death in the community that we have decided to set up a Cameroonian non-profit association called “Retour au Pays Natal Germany”.
